Got Yeast?

Buying yeast in bulk always begs the question--how long will it last????

That depends.

Putting it in the refrigerator keeps it fresher and extends shelf life to about six months after opening.

Putting it in the FREEZER before or after opening will extend shelf life to a year and beyond.  I'd recommend putting the yeast in a JAR.  It will keep longer.   FYI...I've personally used yeast keep in the freezer YEARS beyond the expiration date.

However long you've had your yeast, even if you just purchased it, always PROOF it before you use it!!

I do it with the recipe ingredients.  Use about 1/4 cup of your water, WARM.  Not cold and definitely not hot.  Add a teaspoon of sugar, about 2+ teaspoons of yeast and let it set for ten minutes or so.

If it bubbles up, IT'S GOOD TO GO!!  If it doesn't, don't bother making your bread, it won't rise.

We have plenty of yeast at our country store:
